Marijuana and Canada

I just read an article about a recent marijuana legalization push in Canada. Along with the usual reasoning (I.E. govt revenue, prison spending, crime reduction), the author brings up a very interesting point. He says “Let’s treat marijuana and other drugs as a health issue rather than a crime.” He cites tobacco as an example that this technique works. Although they are entirely legal, use of cigarettes has drastically dropped. Legalizing marijuana and then pushing the health issues of the plant will prevent the “rebel factor” that makes a lot of people want to smoke it in the first place! If legalized, the rates of marijuana use coule go down, and those who enjoy it or need it for medical reasons can enjoy it while creating some government revenue. Seems like a win win situation to me! According to the article legalization talks are in the near future, so it will be very interesting to see if this approach works.

New project. Writing a concerto for flute and orchestra.
Interestingly, doing the opposite of what most composers do and writing the piano reduction before the full orchestration. I suspect it will be far easier this way. We’ll see though.
I’ve been listening to these a lot and I think that the minimalist/post rock aspects of these artists and pieces are gonna play a major role in this composition:
John Adams - The Dharma at Big Sur
Explosions in the Sky
Sigur Ros
Terry Riley
